A downloadable trip to Hell

You have two dice: Demon and Child, and they feud for reign of your soul. Your band of misfits: a twelve year-old-girl, a punk teen, a trans anarchist, (you know the type) accidentally opened a gate to Hell. Now you have to slog through the abode of the damned and back. But beware! As a volatile delinquent, you risk losing your balance between your inner demon and your inner child. Don't give up. Don't give in. DON'T LOSE CONTROL

In this game you

  • risk losing control in order to roll bigger dice
  • undergo demonic transformations
  • spend your resource to unleash high-octane powers
  • tear fiends limb from limb
  • recover your resource
  • then repeat.

All the rules you need for fast-paced, powerful, EASY combat on one page! Including 3 badass classes, 4 types of bloodthirsty fiends, a handy difficulty chart, and exciting optional rules!

This is my debut tabletop project! I really hope everyone enjoys it 🖤 I wanted to make a game where you could play teenagers with big weapons, glowing eyes, and really cool hair. Where everything was meant to go off the rails.

PLAYLIST

At every step of Demon Child's creation I drew upon music for inspiration. It is at the heart of this project. When I run my games, I start a song at the start of combat, and make sure to finish combat before it loops enough to become annoying.

INSPIRATIONS

STYLE

Riot grrrl for the feminist punk movement and zines such as Tobi Vail's: 'Jigsaw' and Allison Wolfe and Molly Neuman's: 'Girl Germs'.

"A joy of loud driving chaotic music is part of me, part of my sexuality, and no one can theorize that away."
-Terri Sutton, “Women, Sex, & Rock ‘n’ Roll”, Puncture 1989

Nimona and Sucker Punch for creating iconic and inspiring demon children.

Mork Borg for teaching me to pack a punch into every inch

DOOM 2016. RIP. AND. TEAR.

MECHANICS

The demon-child scale was inspired by:

  • Grant Howitt's Honey Heist and The Witch House for their simple two stat 'corruption' mechanics.
  • Avatar Legends by Magpie Games for their balance track mechanics (principles and losing your balance).
  • David Black's Black Hack for their usage die mechanics.

The combat was inspired by:

  • Chris McDowall's rules-lite combat from Into the Odd.
  • Lumen by Spencer Campbell. It's worth a read for any rpg designer and illuminates the combat in Demon Child.
This game is Illuminated by LUMEN, based on the LUMEN RPG system designed by Spencer Campbell, Gila RPGs. This game is in no way affiliated with Spencer Campbell or Gila RPGs.

Oh hell yeah! Now here’s a two-stat game I can get behind: evocative and distinct sides of the spectrum, and very flavorful demises if you fall off either end. Classic LUMEN combat supported by the whimsical premise of some youngsters ripping and tearing their way through the lands of the damned.

A full stylistic package of a game (soundtrack is a fantastic touch) that grabs you by the skull and screams punk at you. A full package in every regard really: very organized, dots all the i’s and crosses all the t’s, even if they’re written in blood. Would love to see more indie tabletops with this level of care put into their presentation.

Only other thing I’d like to see is some ideas for how to close the gate to Hell, to help give the session an overall goal to chaotically barrel towards. Anyways, game is damn good, wall of text over!
